Chemical Peels

What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are treatments that resurface the skin, improving the outer layers to address acne, acne scars, hyperpigmentation and fine lines & wrinkles.* Peels are formulated as light, medium or deep chemical treatments, and vary based on the chemicals used and how they were formulated. Depending on the issues you’d like to treat, we can design the perfect peel just for you!

How do chemical peels work?

All chemical peels remove outer layers of the skin, though the number of layers will depend on the intensity of the peel. The most common chemicals used in peels are alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), phenol and trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Phenol is the strongest chemical of the group and are only used in deep peels. Alpha and beta hydroxy acids, on the other hand, are the lightest acids and are only used in light peels. TCA is often used in many different formulations.

When chemical formulations are applied to the face, they cause the skin “blister,” and eventually peel off. The new skin that develops is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin.* At Elite Plus Laser Centre in Edson, we apply peels to face, neck and hands.

What should I expect during treatment?

When you come in for your initial appointment, we can assess your skin and determine which peel or laser treatment would work best. If peels are recommended, we create a custom formulation just for you. Depending on the type of peel you receive, you may notice a mild tingling sensation or feel heat on your skin. Some acids are neutralized by us, while others are self-neutralizing and continue to work after you leave our laser centre.*

What should I expect from the results?

After your chemical peel, by the second or third day, you should notice peeling or flaking of your skin. If you keep your skin well-hydrated, it will continue to peel for 7-10 days. After this period, you should begin to see improvements to your skin’s surface.* We recommend that your peels be done in a series of 6, spread 3 weeks apart. Results will also depend on formulation used and the skin conditions you are looking to treat. We can provide you with more information about expected results during your appointment. After your peel, your skin will be temporarily more sensitive to the sun. We recommend that you wear a broad spectrum sunscreen and that you limit the amount of time you spend in the sun.
