What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive, chemical-free treatment that can improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines + wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and stretch marks.* This skin rejuvenation treatment is appropriately named because it uses several tiny needles to create micro-perforations in the skin. By creating these ‘microwounds,’ your body will respond by creating new collagen and elastin production.* Collagen and elastin are what make our skin elastic, firm and smooth. Yes, with microneedling, you can even improve your skin’s tone and texture.*

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy, and with a pen-like device, we create tiny holes in the top layer of your skin. This “controlled” injury process opens up your skin with tiny tears. As part of your body’s natural healing response, new collagen and elastin are produced. This new production of collagen and elastin will help to fill in and smooth out your wrinkles and fine lines.* With new skin cells, age spots, acne scars and stretch marks can also be reduced.* At Elite Plus Laser Centre in Edson, we primarily use microneedling to treat the face, but it the device can also be used to soften stretch marks on the body. These new micro-channels in your skin will also allow for better penetration and diffusion of anti-aging serums and creams as well.*

What should I expect during treatment?

During your initial consultation, we will discuss your aesthetic goals and determine if microneedling is the best treatment for you. During the procedure, we will use a small, pen-sized device. This pen-sized device contains around 12 small, sterile needles. The microneedling device will be placed over the targeted areas, and the needles will create a series of tiny incisions into your skin at varying depths based on your unique skin condition. Treatments take 30 minutes to an hour, depending the size of the areas we treat. A topical numbing cream will be applied before your treatment starts, so you will not experience any discomfort during your session.

For optimal results, you will need to undergo 3-4 treatments spaced 6 weeks apart.* To maintain long lasting results, you will need to come for one additional maintenance treatment every year.*

What should I expect from the results?

The results are immediate, though you will begin to see improvements to your skin over the course of a few weeks.* The full results are usually seen after several months, as collagen production continues.* As your skin heals from the minor incisions created by the microneedling device, it will eliminate many of the common signs of age and wear.* As a result, you will experience a revitalized  appearance.* Each patient is different, and the number of treatments you’ll need will be determined when you come in for your initial appointment. Most patients require at least 3 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. If you suffer from deep wrinkles, advanced photo aging, acne scars and/or stretch marks, 6-8 treatments may be needed.
